Description by the author

The Betuwe – located between the rivers Waal, Nederrijn and Lek – is still best known for its fruit orchards. The beautiful river Linge – which largely still follows the same course as hundreds of years ago – forms the heart of the fruit-growing area. The Linge winds through a beautiful and very varied Dutch landscape of small villages, narrow dikes and many ferries. Linge means "long river", because with 108 km. the Linge is the longest continuous river in the Netherlands.

The Land van Maas en Waal also has several beautiful and historic dike villages. But it is of course best known for the song of the same name by Lennaert Nijgh and Boudewijn de Groot from 1967:
"And under the green sky, in the blue sun
Plays the tin concert band in a large rain barrel
There it treks over the hills and through the large forest
The long procession into the mountains, from the circus Jeroen Bosch
And we talk and we sing and we all laugh
Because there is the land of Maas and Waal in the high mountains."
By the way, we just don't get to those high mountains this time.

The route starts on the terrace of restaurant La Montagne, Kerkewijk zuid 115, 3911 SC Rhenen.

During the route you can visit the Gardens of Appeltern. The construction of the first model gardens started 25 years ago. The garden park in Appeltern is now 13 hectares in size. And there are now more than 190 model gardens in the park.

The route ends in the old center of Wijk bij Duurstede. A circular walk is definitely recommended here. Already in Roman times the trading place Dorestad was located nearby, from which the name Duurstede is derived.

We park in the vicinity of Eethuys Dorestad, Volderstraat 2
3961 BB Wijk bij Duurstede in the center, where you can continue to have a drink if desired and possibly. a bite to eat.
