On the night of 11 to 12 May 2008, the classicist St. Peter's Church, classified as a monument, was almost completely destroyed by fire. Only a few walls and the sacristy are still standing. The contents were also lost in the fire. Of the original church, only the tower core from the 13th century was preserved and it has now also been completely destroyed. The cause was probably a flare. At that time, a fair took place in Galmaarden on the occasion of Pentecost.
