Houffalize is the center of the Upper Ourthe. It is a small town, nestled in the twist of an Ourthemeander. Here, too, the Battle of the Bulge in early 1945 did its devastating work. Witness to this is a German Panther tank, which was dug up from the river after the offensive and has now come to a halt in a square. The tank, which was built in 1942 for the Eastern Front, has a weight of 43 tons, 110 mm armor, a 75 mm gun and two 7.92 mm machine guns. In the offensive at the time, the Panther surpassed all American and British tanks.
