Orval Abbey was abandoned during the French Revolution when the monks fled from Orval to nearby Luxembourg. According to the farmers in the region, the monks buried a treasure the night before they left. And according to these stories, these were even the crown jewels of the French king Louis XVI. This assumption is based on the fact that the French King Louis XVI was arrested at Varennes and that he was on his way to Orval.
Because the troops of the French General Loison did not like the crown jewels, they burned down the abbey in revenge.

They dug a tunnen on the pond but it collapsed, leading to the suffocation of 22 treasure hunters. This story was described in detail in the regional novel "Les Errants de la Nuit" by Paul Féval.
