Maredret Abbey

Grey, sinister and majestic at the same time.

The Abbey of Maredret was built in 1893 at the instigation of Agnès de Hemptinne. It will finance the construction of the property from its own funds on land donated by the Desclée family. Agnes of Hemptinne was the younger sister of Hildebrand of Hemptinne who founded the neo-Gothic abbey of Maredsous (which is a stone's throw from Maredret), again with the help of the Desclée family. Agnes of Hemptinne acquired a solid religious and monastic formation at the monastery of Solesme, which enabled her to found Maredret with seven sisters and to become the first abbess sister there. She took an active part in the construction of the abbey church (a magnificent neo-Gothic structure, renowned for its acoustics) and its decoration.
