The Tuiltermolen on the Tuilterdemer was already mentioned in 1213. In 1654 a force of the Lorraine set up camp near the Tuiltermolen. They supplied themselves with the grain from the barn of Herkenrode. In 1673, some 300 French soldiers clashed with a vigilante at the Tuiltermolen, the vigilantes were defeated and the Tuiltermolen was looted and set on fire.
In 1824, the company buildings around the Herkenrode Abbey Mill were destroyed by fire. The spinning mill located there was transferred to the Tuiltermolen.
The Tuiltermolen was rebuilt in 1853 after fire and became a grain and bark mill. This bark mill was abolished in 1882, while the grain mill was already furnished as a house. The attached stables are used as storage space for their own tools.
The mill itself, which lacks its wheel and interior, is currently not yet open to visitors. Since 1998, the Tuiltermolen has been owned by the Ministry of the Flemish Community, AMINAL, Nature Department, now The Agency for Nature and Forests. This service will use the Tuiltermolen as a logistics centre for the nature management of the region. Architect Willem Brankaer made a design of a new water wheel in 2007. The restoration permit has been granted, so that we can also expect activity here in the foreseeable future.
