The valley of the Ninglinspo

The final 2.7 km of the course of the Ninglinspo, a small river in the southern Ardennes, takes it into the forest, where it then descends about 200 metres, running through a small, steep-sided valley.

It crashes down rapids and little waterfalls, its bed strewn with quartzite, a rock so hard that even this fast-flowing river cannot easily break it up.

At certain points, it flows over rocky outcrops where sand and small rocks, swirled round by the current, have created roughly circular cavities, or marmites.

These are known by delightfully poetic names such as Le Bain de Diane (Diana’s Pool), Le Bain du Cerf (The Stag’s Pool) or La Chaudière (The Cauldron).
