Pump building Bossuit

The Bossuit Pump Building was built in the 19th century to supply the Bossuit-Kortrijk Canal with water. This canal connects the Scheldt with the Lys. It was excavated in the middle of the 19th century, when industrialisation was in full swing in Belgium and northern France. The aim is to supply the Lys region with Walloon raw materials quickly and efficiently, but above all to offer the northern French and Hainaut industry a good connection with each other and the North Sea.
About 1,100 workers and 40 horses worked on the canal for three years. A pump building will be built in Bossuit, where large steam engines pump up the water for the canal from the Scheldt.

In the seventies, the canal was modernized and widened to fifty meters. The old pump building cannot cope with this large flow and is closed. Now it is a wonderful starting point for cycling and walking tours.
