This huge memorial, a stone’‘s throw from Hitler’‘s bunker in the heart of Berlin, commemorates the Holocaust in unforgettable fashion. Designed by Peter Eisenmann, a New York-based architect, “Field of Stelae” is a departure from the traditional concept of a memorial. More than 2,700 concrete pillars of differing sizes cover a gently sloping field that stretches into the distance. Visitors can enter the abstract monument from all sides and stroll among the rows of slabs. An underground information centre in the south-eastern corner of the field provides background material and has audio guides in French, Hebrew, Italian, Polish, Russian and Spanish for €2. Guided tours of the monument can be booked in advance.
