You might see quite frequent a man sweeping the stairs of the cathedral of Bremen. It’s a tradition in Germany when you become 30 and you don’t have a girlfriend yet that you have to sweep the stairs of the cathedral, till you are kissed “free” by a gril. You will also see that people will give those guys something to do, because they will throw dirt on the stairs.

The tradition is also exported to other cathedrals and stairs outside Bremen, but the tradition started here…

The cathedral of Bremen has some mummies inside a Bleikeller or lead basement in the crypte.
It has the remarkable capacity to preserve bodies of the dead in an amazing good condition. Eight mummies in glass topped coffins can be seen here. The crypte has become the cathedral’s most visited atttaction for more than 300 years.

You can’t enter the crypte from inside the cathedral. You have to enter it via the courtyard next to the cathedral.

The cathedral has twin 99 meter towers. It is possible to climb the south tower for a view of the city (not the north tower).
