The Canary Islands are a candidate to be the mythological Fortunate Isles mentioned by the Greeks. For the Greeks, the Fortunate Isles were the place where the world stopped. The cartographer Ptolemy selected these isles to put his prime meridian through it. It was obvious for him that this was the western limit of the world.
