BETWEEN THE ATLANTIC AND THE PACIFIC OCEANS

Every June 16th or the following Sunday if that date falls on a weekday, the beaches of Area Maior and Canido are the first places the procession of Saint Adrian, passes through. Early in the morning, worshippers, locals, and barefoot devotees accompany the statue of the Saint some 2.5 miles along the path connecting Malpica to the sanctuary, which is located at the cape of Monte Beo and just opposite the Sisargas islands. At 200 yards above sea level, the views are amazing.
Legend has it that Saint Adrian cleared the area of a plague of snakes. It is said that he left his footprints on the cliffs of O Portiño. On a white stone next to the shore, the silhouette of the snake he supposedly crushed with his foot, in order to frighten off the rest of the reptiles, can be seen. The procession has been declared Fiesta of Galician Tourist Interest.
San Francisco (USA)
Before returning at sunset to the parish church, the procession passes through Seaia, where the Franciscan monk Pedro Cambón was born in 1738. Cambón was one of the founders, in 1776, of the Mission San Francisco de Asis, the origins of the US city of the same name, whose shores are washed by the Pacific Ocean. Another Franciscan monk from Malpica who arrived in the New World was Juan Riobó, who preached in California, and was a chaplain in an Expedition to the Alaskan coast.
