Napoleon envisioned setting up a cross-Channel optical telegraph on Cap Gris Nez to send messages across. This optical telegraph or semaphore ‘shows’ information by means of visual shapes or signals using shutters or beams.

The first semaphore of this line was installed on the cape in 1805.
