In 1758, there was a proposal by the French architect Charles Ribart for an elephant-shaped building on the location of the current Arc de Triomphe. The French Government, however, was not amused and turned it down.

The triumphal arch Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. On the inside and the top of the arc there are all of the names of generals and wars fought. Underneath is the tomb of the unknown soldier from World War I.
