The Avebury complex dates from around 2500 BC. It is one of the oldest Neolithic monuments in Europe. It is even older than the better known Stonehenge 32 km more to the south. The village of Avery is built in the centre of the stone circle. Many of the stones used for the production of the prehistoric monument were used for the construction of the village. A kind of archaeological recycling.
