Young Lord Byron lived at Newstead Abbey for a short period of time. Many repairs were needed and he moved with his mother to Nottingham and neither lived permanently at Newstead for any extended period. His view of the decayed Newstead became one of the romantic ruin, a metaphor for his family’‘s fall.

Later on, when Lord Byron was travelling in Italy, he sold Newstead Abbey which cleared most of his debts and left him with a small income.
