This pump was a source of the cholera epidemic in London. The fact that contaminated water was the source of the cholera was discovered by one of the first known spatial analyses made by Dr John Snow. He mapped the number of of ill people and noticed the big concentration in this area around the pump. A technique which is now a classic in spatial data analysis and GIS.
