The spectacular landscape of the Lake District is shaped by the glaciation. The last glaciers cutting out U-shaped valleys were here about 15,000 years ago. This is the place to come if you want to study glacial geomorphology. Beside the U-shaped valleys, you can see glacial cirques with their tarns or small lakes.
As the name of the region indicates, the Lake District is famous for its lakes and mountains. The mountains are called “fells” here. It’s the most visited part of the United Kingdom for recreation.
