At the centre of Aston on Clun lies an Arbor Tree, which usually has flags ceremonially held amongst its branches. It’s an old tradition which is about to disappear in the UK but held alive in this village as the only place in the UK. People put a piece of cloth on the tree on May 19 to request fertility. The tree is a black poplar (Populus nigra).
