Description by the author

A circular route including the route 66 track from Dunnington, through Stamford Bridge. The route is flat as a pancake and low traffic.

There's a sort of "off-road" section of Route 66 between Stamford Bridget and Dunnington where you pass through fields on a rough path; it's easily passable on a touring bike and adds some interest to the route, but leave your ultra-light racing wheels at home.

Take the opportunity to look at the rail bridge in Stamford Bridge from above and below!

There are pubs in Elvington, Sutton, Dunnington, Stamford Bridge and Newton (possibly more). Stamford Bridge is your best bet for cafe and other shops. The balloon tree farm shop is just off the route and has a cafe, pick your own fruit/veg as well as lots of fresh produce.

Like most circular routes, it's best done anti-clockwise to minimize right turns.

From Elvington, head away from York towards Sutton-upon-Derwent on the B1228 and cross the bridge into Sutton. Fork left just before the tennis courts and then take a left to Newton. At the end of the road, carefully cross over (slightly rightwards) the main road (A1079) into Wilberfoss.

In Wilberfoss, take the signposted left turn towards Stamford Bridge. After a mile or two, turn left (again signposted Stamford Bridge) - you have now joined the Route 66 cycle route (look out for the Route 66 blue signs). Follow this long straight road into Stamford Bridge, following the 66 signs.

At the church in Stamford Bridge, turn left then shortly afterwards turn right at the old railway gate into a park (still following the Route 66 signs) and over the old railway bridge. The route takes you along a couple of (off the road) cycle paths on the A166 and turns left into a private road towards Scoreby, where the surface gets a bit rough. (Alternatively continue on the A166 for 100 metres to visit the Balloon Tree farm shop).

Continue following the Route 66 signs through the fields (cycle quietly and you might be lucky enough to see a dear in the woords) eventually emerge into Dunnington. At the end of the road, turn left and left, pass the sports field and reach the A1079 again.

Turn right onto the A1079 for about 10 metres then immediately left into Common Lane. Get your head down andyour speed up for a sprint finish. Left at the end onto the B1228 takes you back to Elvington where there's a pint at the Grey Horse waiting for you.

Alternative instructions for clockwise route below.

From Elvington, head towards York on the B1228, turning right mid-way down the long straight. Cross the main road (A1079) on the staggered junction into Dunnington, turning right and right past the park down Intake Lane.
Follow the route 66 signs through the "off-road" track through the fields, eventually turning right onto the cycle path next to the A166, before ending up in the park at Stamford Bridge.

Turn left out the park, and try to follow the Route 66 signs, making sure you fork right at the church. (Shops, fish&chips etc are just down the hill instead of turning right).

Continue to follow Route 66 along Moor Road out of the village, eventually leaving Route 66 by turning right towards Wilberfoss were signposted.

When you get to Wilberfoss, turn right at the end then carefully cross straight over the A1079 to join the slip road ahead and slightly to the right. Follow the road to Newton-upon-Derwent, turn right at the end back to Sutton then Elvington.
