The Acropolis Museum opened its doors at the end of 2007. It contains the most significant pieces of art found on the Acropolys. Previously, these pieces of art were stored in the small museum at the top of the Acropolys itself. In the museum, you will find an empty room for the Elgin marbles which were taken (or rather ‘‘bought’’ from the Turks) by the British and are exposed in the British Museum. Merlina Mercourri and many other Greeks kept on fighting to get their pieces of art back.

The Acropolis Museum contains the most important pieces of art found on the Acropolis. Before thsi museum was opened, you could see those pieces of art in the small museum at the top of the Acropolis.

You will also see some empty spaces in the museum. These are reserved for the “Elgin Marbles”. These pieces were ‘bought’ by the English from the Turks when they occupied Greece.

Merlina Mercourri tried to get back the Elgin Marbles but didn’t succeed. You can see the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum in London.

The orientation of the top of the Acropolis Museum looks a bit tilted versus the ground plan of the museum. That is no coincidence.

If you look at the direction of the top floor, you will see it is parallel to the orientation of the rim of the Acropolis.

There was a debate going on if these marvelous houses along the Arcopolis stroll have to be removed, because they are blocking the view from the cafetaria of the Museum of the Acropolis. So far, these marvelous houses are still there.
