Cephalonia is the island where the story takes place of “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, a 1993 novel written by Louis de Bernières. A movie was created from the book in 2001, featuring Penelope Cruz and Nicolas Cage. Many scenes were shot in Cephalonia.
A 2003 research showed that west of the island Cephalonia, there was a dramatic geological event. About 10km to the west of the Cephalonian, the seabed dropped from 300m to 3000m. This area is a very tectonic active place. The last major earthquake took place in august 1953.
