Aristotle was born in Stageira in 384 BC. His father Nicomachus was the personal physician to King Amyntas of Macedon. Aristotle was trained and educated as a member of the aristocracy. At about the age of eighteen, he went to Athens to continue his education at Plato’s Academy.

The ancient city Stageira lies approximately 8 kilometres north northeast of the present-day village of Stagira. There is (again) not much left of the city of Stageira. It was also destroyed by the father of Alexander the Great, Philippus II. But as a thank you to Aristotle to educate his son, Philippus rebuilt the city.
