The construction of the Dam of Marathon is linked to a major historical event in Greece: the Greek deportation of Asia Minor at the end of the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922). The rapid population increase in the Athens area following the huge influx of refugees from Asia Minor caused a huge increase in water demand. The construction of the dam lasted from 1926 to 1929.
Did you know that the dam of Lake Marathonas is unique worldwide because its external cladding of white pentelikon marble is the same marble used in construction of the Parthenon and the other buildings in the Acropolis. If you look south from here, the big mountain you see is Penteli mountain where they got he marble.
