Most of his life, the composer Giacomo Puccini lived in Torre del Lago. The village is located on Lake Massaciucoli. Here Puccini enjoyed life with his friends partying. But he also suffered the most. After an accident, he was a time in a wheelchair and got depressed. They took the maid Doria Manfredi on. Puccini's wife accused her of fornication with her husband. The girl committed suicide. The autopsy showed that Doria was a virgin. As a result the wife of Puccini, Elvira, was sentenced to prison. Puccini later abandoned Torre del Lago because of the stench of the local peat factory. He moved to Viareggio but would still be buried here.
