The Vitrupe River flows out of the Lādes Lake, flows through Riebezers Lake, Skujas Lake, Auziņu Lake and Mazezers Lake. At this section it takes the largest tributaries Kranupīte River and Cimeļupe River. It is connected with the Lielupe River by Liepupe – Reiņupe canal. After the source from Riebezers to Ķirbiži the Vitrupe River flows along ~ 0.5 km wide and 15 m deep valley below which is partially buried ancient valley. Riverbed from Vitrupe village to Ķirbiži is regulated. After Ķirbiži the valley becomes narrower and ends shortly before the sea. In the lower course the river becomes faster and in its banks the red sandstones can be seen. In the literature sources sometimes it is incorrectly used as Reiņupe River what actually refers only to the connecting canal (6.1 km), the aim of which was to supply the water to power plant of Liepupe collective farm.
