The dewatering of the peat polder of Alblassemerwaard was a big project carrie out in the 18th and 19th centuries. A large range of polder windmills had to keep he polder dry. The polder was already built in the Middle Ages. This unique series of 19 mills is now classified as World Heritage. Today this area is kept dry with modern techniques.
