Monastery Wittem

Embedded in the rolling landscape of South Limburg lies Pelgrimsoord Klooster Wittem, for centuries a hospitable stopping place for the soul but best known as a place of pilgrimage for Saint Gerard and Mary of Perpetual Help.
Wittem Monastery is also located on beautiful cycling and walking routes. In the immediate vicinity you will find cozy cafes, hospitable hotels and good restaurants.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and other visitors have lit countless candles there in recent decades. The church and the devotional chapels of Wittem Monastery still have a strong attraction for pilgrims, pilgrims, local residents and tourists.
There is an oasis of peace in this unusual monastery where Redemptorist fathers live and work together with others. But you can also go to the monastery bookstore and world shop. The bookstore has the most extensive collection of Christian and spiritual books in the area. There is also a range of books about pilgrims, hiking and Limburg.

On the road with the Wittemer backpack
It is well known that you can walk beautifully from Wittem. New this summer is the Wittemer backpack hike. As an individual hiker, duo, groups and families, you can experience what it can be like during a pilgrimage walk.
The Wittemer backpack is a sturdy cotton backpack containing a booklet with the 14-kilometer walking route, route map, interesting facts, reflective texts and a photo assignment. Furthermore, the backpack is filled with a bottle of drink plus sweet and savory refreshments for on the go.

Through beautiful nature, tranquil landscapes, breathtaking views and idyllic villages. And along the way you stand still. Reflect on what moves you, what matters and what is of value to you. You discover the pilgrim within yourself.
The walking booklet helps with the pilgrim prayer and other inspiring and reflective texts. These meditative and spiritual texts make this walk special and personal. After the walking tour, the reception of Wittem Monastery (until 17:00) provides the booklet with a real pilgrim's stamp including the pilgrim's medallion of Gerardus.

The route can be walked at any time from the reception of Klooster Wittem. The price for the filled Wittemer backpack (including hiking booklet, drinks and refreshments) is € 9.95.
