Basin water

We are going on a wide canal here. This canal brings the water to the sea via the North Holland Canal. Most of the time, the excess water needs to be drained. But during long periods of drought, water from the basin waters is let into the polders. Preferably not, because mixing different water qualities creates an imbalance. Especially here in the Hargerpolder and Pettemerpolder, the water is very brackish due to seepage along the sea wall and very sweet at the dunes (Hargergat). This special 'fresh-salt gradient' with associated flora and fauna is one of the reasons why the polders are a Natura 2000 area.
