The villa owes its name to the village of Sanoer on Bali. Captain de Vries saved his life when he was shipwrecked there. De Vries sailed on the merchant navy and was able to have the villa built in 1906 with the money earned. De Vries was impressed by the Italian culture and that influence is reflected in the design of the house, but especially the garden.
Later the house was given a second name: 'De Burlenburgh'. Derived from the offices of the ruddy male deer. The house is also one of the association houses for the male members of the Wageningen Student Association 'Ceres'.
