Orval Abbey

Orval Abbey was abandoned during the French Revolution when the monks fled from Orval to nearby Luxembourg. According to the farmers in the region, the monks buried a treasure the night before they left. And according to these stories, these were even the crown jewels of the French king Louis XVI. This assumption is based on the fact that the French King Louis XVI was arrested at Varennes and that he was on his way to Orval.
Because the troops of the French General Loison did not like the crown jewels, they burned down the abbey in revenge.
In 1814, the search was tried again by a group calling themselves "the Night Knights". This search even led to 22 fatalities. For two years they searched in the ponds of the adbij. They dug a tunnen on the pond but it collapsed, leading to the suffocation of 22 treasure hunters. This story was described in detail in the regional novel "Les Errants de la Nuit" by Paul Féval.

In 1829, Count de Geloes, chamberlain to King William I, bought the ruins of Orval with the hope of finding the treasure. According to legend, the shcat will only be found when the Basilica of Saint Bernard of Clervaux rises from the ashes. This happened in 1926...
