Charles of Lorraine was born in 1712 in Lunéville, close to Nancy. He was the brother of François of Lorraine, and as such the brother in law of Maria Theresia of Austria. He became ruler of the Southern Low Countires. He was very much loved by the people and he got two statues: one of them was in the gable of the "Brouwershuis" on the Grote Markt of Brussels. The second was on the Koningsplein.
According to the author Michael Baigent, he was also the head of the Prieuré de Sion, although the organisation of that group is very much disputed by scholars.
