Water tower (Meije)

Source: GroeneHartstocht

The water tower in Meije was designed by architects Posthumus Meyes and Van der Linden and was built in 1931–1932 by contractor Bollen from Hilversum on behalf of the then new water supply company De Elf Gemeenten to a design by engineering firm Dwars, Hederik and Verhey. If you have seen the tower from far and wide, it looks like a Rocket, hence the nickname nuclear missile. The tower is more commonly known as Pietje Pencil or the salt cellar. The tower is owned by drinking water company Oasen and has the status of a national monument.

The tower has a height of 57.65 meters and a water reservoir at the top of the tower with a capacity of 450 m3. The small windows in the sleek façade and a striking cornice provide beautiful detailing. During the Second World War, the tower was a beacon for pilots from both the German and Allied sides.

The tower was restored in 1977. In addition to a thousand litres of repair mortar, another two hundred litres of white concrete paint were applied to the exterior, giving the tower its current appearance.

The meijer tower also has the myth that it contains a nuclear missile. That nuclear missile is said to have been brought here by the Americans during the cold war and to hide it they put it in a tower and said it was a water tower. This is also because of its appearance.
