The Mortars

Source: Roots

With over 1000 hectares, De Mortelen is the largest contiguous landscape reserve in Brabant. You figuratively take a step back in time. The small-scale landscape evokes memories of the time before the large-scale land consolidation in the second half of the last century. Mortar means 'soft ground'. As a counterpart, there are the higher and drier downs. The creation of the scenery has everything to do with this. By inheritance, heirs were all given equal parts of wet and dry soil. This caused fragmentation. The hedgerows that lined the plots contributed to the characteristic 'chambering'.
