The history of Bloemendal Castle begins with the Aachen cloth manufacturer Arnold von Clermont. As purveyor to the Russian tsar, Von Clermont had come a long way with his trade in cloth. At the age of 63, he decided to realize his life's dream. Opposite his new weaving mill, the foundation stone of a royal country residence was laid in 1791. This residence bore the name Schloss Blumenthal.
