Today Elis is a small village build over the ruins of the ancient town. It has a museum that contains many treasures, discovered in the recent excavations. It also has one of the most well-preserved Ancient Theaters in Greece. Elis is well known for breeding horses and its "creation" of the Olympic games.
Augeas was the king of the area Elis. He is known for his stables with a great number of cattle that had never been cleaned. It was one of Heracles tasks to clean the stables. Heracles succeeded by rerouting the rivers Alpheus and Peneus to wash out the filth.
