Fort at Asperen

Source: Gilbert van Schoonbekepad / De Wandelmaker

In the 19th century, the New Dutch Water Line was built, a defense system in which large areas of land could be flooded. Fort at Asperen, built between 1845 and 1847, was part of this line. It is a so-called tower fort with towers of heavy masonry, which have a diameter of no less than 33 meters. The fort is surrounded by a moat and can be reached via a wooden bridge. On April 12, 1940, the water line was flooded for the last time and the Fort at Asperen was put into position against the enemy.

It is now called Kunstfort Asperen and cultural events and exhibitions are organized.
