Together with the Weerribben, the Wieden form one of the most important peat bogs in Europe. If it were up to Natuurmonumenten, De Wieden and de Weerribben would not only be merged, but also considerably expanded. This gives osprey and otter a new chance. The only problem is that this requires dozens of farmers to be bought out, and they are reluctant to return their cultivated land to the cattail and the trouser forest.
