Lion of Gileppe

The main feature of the Gileppe dam is a 13.5-metre-high and 180-tonne sandstone lion. Did you know that the orientation of the lion is not just a coincidence? The lion stands on top of the dam wall and was placed in such a way that it proudly looks out in the direction of the border with Prussia, which was only 5 kilometers away. The dam was inaugurated by King Leopold II on 28 July 1878. And at that time, Prussia was an important country to look forward to!
