Tijdens de Spaanse Burgeroorlog werd een loopgravenoorlog uitgevochten ten oosten van Zaragoza. Er was zwaar tekort aan munitie en er werd vooral geroepen. Geert Mak vertelt in zijn boek ‘In Europa’ dat men elkaar probeerde te overtroeven met het eten dat men zogenaamd kreeg. ‘Boter met toast’ riep men, alhoewel beide kanten dat daar nooit gezien hebben.
