The Rhone passes at the western edge of the city of Avignon but is divided into two arms. They are called “Petit Rhone” or “dead arm” in the east and “Grand Rhône “or” strong arm “to the west. It is the “Strong Arm” which touches Villeneuve-les-Avignon. Between the two arms, a string of islands are loaceted. The largest one is Island Barthelasse.
