Bunker

In 1939/1940 a part of the Iron Wall was erected in Pamel. This was part of a branch of the K(oningshooikt-W(aver)-line, branch that ran from Wavre to Pamel, known as the KW line. The KW line had to be an obstacle for the Germans. Bunkers were built in six villages on the branch, including Pamel. The guidelines for the tender were very strict, not only on the work to be carried out and the materials but also on the person of the contractor, his staff and the staff he might recruit on site. For example, when recruiting workers, he had to give preference to veterans and war invalids. He also had to reveal his nationality. Of the materials used, he had to indicate the country of origin. Doors, racks and affuits could only be supplied by the Belgian state. They were delivered to Ninove station from where the contractor had to take care of their own transport.
