Renesse Castle

Around 1200, the early medieval domain Heldren was split into two Loon LORDSHIPS, namely 's Herenelderen and Genoelselderen. The lords of 's Herenelderen, the van Hamal family, inhabited this moated castle from the 13th century until 1501. Afterwards, the castle passed into the hands of the de Renesse family. Several members of both families are buried in St. Stephen's Church. The castle farm extends along the Sint-Stefanusstraat and has two corner towers.

GLORY
The lordship is a form of government that dates back to the Middle Ages. It stems from the so-called 'feudal' system of lords and fiefs. Central is the 'lord' who received certain rights from the king. Initially, in exchange for these rights, he had to swear military allegiance to the king.
The 'lordship' is the area to which the rights relate. There were many rights that a 'gentleman' could receive, such as: the right to levy land taxes, the right to mint coins, the right to hunt, the right to hold an annual or weekly market... These rights are, of course, linked to certain income.
