The beaver is not an indigenous animal of Tierra del Fuego. They were apparently introduced in Tierra del Fuego some time at the first half of the 20th century, from Canada. The idea was that the cold climate of Patagonia, would help them develop a rich fur which could then be commercially exploited. A brilliant idea by all means, but one which was doomed from the start. Apparently, the cold winters at the end of the world are not cold enough by comparison to Canada, so that the fur developed by the animals is not commercially viable. Coupled with the fact, that there are no natural predators to hunt them, the beavers have in fact discovered their heaven on earth. So the 50 couples that were originally brought over, have now turned into 150,000 of those suckers, constituting the biggest pest in the island.
