The Grand Place was completely destroyed by a bombardment in 1695 by order of Louis XIV. The French then came up with the concept of terror bombing. The bombs were heated up and then fired to create a blaze on impact. It was intended to cause destruction and terror. Louis XIV had already set up such a campaign in Mons (Mons). The intention was not to take Brussels, but rather to cause terror. He also wanted to get hold of Namur, and wanted to have the effect of the attack on Brussels that troops from Namur would be sent to Brussels and thereby weaken Namur.
The people of Brussels were so resilient that they wanted to show that their spirits were certainly not broken. The Grote Martk was rebuilt in all its glory, where millions of tourists now marvel at in less than 5 years.
