Description

Located on the west side of the d'Ennetieresplein, in the middle of a grazed square, bordered on the east side by a hedge; north side bordered by Bolle Meersstraat, west and south side by castle wall with chapel. Circumferential brick path, along which the St. Livinus procession (Novena from June 29 to July 9) consisting of seven stations, the last one located in the church, see inscription: "7 Stations of St. Livinus, bishop and martyr, arranged around the cemetery in 1890, drawn up by Ch. L. Billau, parish priest in Elverdinge". Originally a Romanesque place of worship, see exposed ironstone foundations of the east and west walls of the north transept arm. Extended into a late Gothic hall church with pseudo-transept, see exposed iron sandstone foundations made for the base of a now disappeared half-column in front of the pseudo-transept. Restoration in 1893 to a design by architect J. Soete (Roeselare): mainly rebuilding the spire and installing stained glass windows. In 1910: extension of the central choir, construction of two new sacristies to replace an old one, and repairs to the roof structure. Reconstruction designed by Jules Coomans in 1925. Almost identical reconstruction, (see plans of 1893), but shortening the naves by one bay. The plan reveals: a pre-set square west tower, a three-aisled nave of four bays, side aisles with straight closure, and to the north baptistery, a main choir of one straight bay and a three-sided closing, a north and south sacristy. Yellow brick building with the use of iron sandstone for the base of the west and south façades, and up to the window finishes in the north façade and main chancel. Covered by means of gable roofs (slates). West tower with four sections marked by cordons, supported by superimposed corner buttresses with cut-outs, at the south-west corner replaced six-sided stair turret with brick spire with crockets. Completely in line with the regional brick Gothic, see among the architectural brick decorations: round, Tudor and pointed arch casements with late Gothic tracery on buttresses, stair turret and at the level of the third section, diamond and cruciform mason's marks. Western basket-arched portal in natural stone profiled frame under drip moulding; above, round-arched niche in ditto frame with crocket and cross decoration, with statue of Saint Livinus. Second section: pointed arched four-light under drip moulding, in profiled frame on sash; The fourth section is opened up by linked reverberation holes, recessed in a basket-arch frame with tracery in the arched field. Closed parapet, enlivened by two superimposed round-arched friezes; corner turrets with crockets. Six-sided brick needle spire trimmed with censure decoration. West, north, east and south façades, rhythmed by buttresses with cut-outs, including angled ones to support east and west spouted gables, and, ajoured by pointed arch windows (three- and two-lights) in profiled frame on chamfer, under drip moulding. Christ on the cross against the façade of the main choir. To the north, a baptistery of one bay under a slate gable roof (ridge direction perpendicular to the church) with hipped roof. Spout skin propped up by means of angled buttresses; pointed arch window. South and north sacristy in adjoining style.
