The watermill of Retie is located south-west of the threshing core between Retie and Kasterlee on the banks of the Kleine Nete. It is a hammer mill with a metal water wheel with wooden blades and a metal milling installation in the brick mill house with hipped roof. The Benedictine Fathers of Corbie Abbey were probably the builders of the mill. The mill may have existed since the eighth century. In the register of Leenhof van Brabant there is already an entry about the watermill from the year 1134. In that year, the watermill was owned by the noble family, the Berthouts of Grimbergen. Legally, it was a so-called ban mill. Such mills were under the supervision of the lord of the village, each subject was obliged to have his grain ground there and to give part of the flour as a tax in kind to the sovereign lord. In 1765 the watermill was rebuilt in stone. Throughout the 19th century, the watermill and surrounding property remained the property of lords with a humper-miller on the watermill and accompanying oil mill. Finally, in 1912, Baron du Four from Turnhout sold the water mill, the large farm and surrounding property to miller Jan Quets from Retie.
