La Baraque Michel is a locality located on the plateau of the High Fens. It is the third highest point in Belgium and the Walloon Region, with an altitude of 674 metres.
La Baraque Michel was founded between 1811 and 1813 by a man named Michel Schmitz from Herbiester (a hamlet near Jalhay). At the time, it was already an inn, but also a refuge for lost travellers.
In foggy weather, the bell was rung there, which led to the rescue of more than a hundred people during the nineteenth century.
Today, La Baraque is still home to an inn and is the starting point for many hikes through the Fens that surround it.
