Bouillon

Bouillon is nestled in a narrow bend of the Semois, and is completely surrounded by steep, wooded hills. A watchtower has been built on one of them: there you can catch the famous town and its surroundings at a glance. Bouillon is the unofficial capital of the Semois. Its history was defined by the unique, fortified castle, which still dominates the town and is the most important example of medieval military architecture in the southern part of the country. You can learn a lot about the city's fascinating historical past in the Musée ducal (Ducal Museum) and in the Archéoscope Godefroid de Bouillon. Bouillon still preserved some parts of its former defensive belt, such as the bastion of the Dauphin, that of Brittany and the bastion of Burgundy (1680). A tourist train takes you from one attraction to another, and also to a wildlife park. To the west of the town, on the quiet banks of the Semois, lies the Cistercian abbey of Our Lady of Clairfontaine, quietly overlooking the meadows near the Semois and the dense deciduous forests on the hillsides. You can buy delicious bread (on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11.00 am), as well as a choice of artisanal objects, made by the sisters who populate the abbey.
