Sint-Pietersveld has a long history of re-educating derailed young people. It was a desolate area for a very long time. In the 19th century a 'Correctional Institution' was established here. Homeless youths, often forced to steal, were taught a trade here during their punishment. The Community Institution for Special Youth Care De Zande and the Penitentiary Agricultural Centre are still here. The beautiful buildings are in neoclassical architectural style.
